Description

Cultures are often remembered best by their iconic architecture. Grand temple-like residences with broad colonnades and gracefully curving staircases instantly come to mind when one thinks of the South. Indeed, possibly the single biggest draw for tourists to the South are these iconic structures. Sadly, most of the column-bedecked dwellings once so plentiful in the South are now gone. Fire, development, decay, indifference, and storms have not been kind to these uniquely glorious homes. Year by year, more historic dwellings are lost. Once lost, an important and irreplaceable part of our historic fabric, indeed our historic identity, is lost as well. Ghosts of Grandeur: Georgia's Lost Antebellum Homes and Plantations is an attempt by the author to forever resurrect some of the images and stories of these lost structures. Many of the images in this book are published for the first time, and their stories were gathered from varied sources such as family descendants, century-old newspaper accounts, and manuscript collections in numerous archives.
